Rental aid for young people: requirements and key aspects

Given the current economic difficulties, it is difficult for young people to access flats and homes in Spain. Because of this, last week the Council of Ministers came up with the so-called “Bono Alquiler Joven”, which consists of a payment of up to 250 euros per month in rental aid for tenants up to 35 years old.

What is it?

The “Bono Alquiler Joven" is a monthly payment aimed to help young people between the ages of 18 and 35 of up to 250 euros towards the rent of their habitual residence, which can be granted for a maximum period of two years.

Although the aid cannot be requested yet, it will have retroactive effect as of January 1, 2022.

Requirements to meet

Applicants must be 35 years or younger and must prove their income does not exceed three times the IPREM, which after the last review in 2022 represents a maximum annual income of 24,318.84 euros.

In general, the monthly rent of the property may not exceed 600 euros, however, each autonomous community is at liberty to raise this limit up to a maximum of 900 euros.

For this specific aid, you must be the rental contract holder, or part of the rental contract and must show you are registered living there by submitting your “empadronamiento”, demonstrating it is your habitual and permanent residence.

The amount of the aid must be used towards paying the rent mentioned in the application and you must be up to date with your rental payments (meaning you are not late or owing anything past due).

Shared flats / renting a room

You will also be eligible for the aid if you are in a shared flat, renting a room for 300 euros or less. As mentioned above, it is at the discretion of each autonomous community to increase this amount and they may do so in this case up to 450 euros.

How and when to apply for the aid?

The aid must be requested at the “oficina del departamento de vivienda” in the autonomous community where you live.

It is expected that this aid will be available for application and request in the next month and a half to two months.
