How do I exchange my UK driving license in Spain?
This past March, the Council of Ministers approved the exchange agreement between Spain and the UK to recognise the validity of driving licenses between the two countries. British citizens residing in Spain who have not had their driving license recognized before Brexit, nor in the successive extensions granted, can do so now.
The agreement allows current residents to exchange their valid licenses issued prior to their entry. Licences must have been issued in the country where the applicant had their legal residence.
In other words, if you are a British citizen holding a valid or expired driving license issued in the UK while you were residing there, you can request to exchange your driving license in Spain, without being subject to any additional requirements of practical or theoretical tests, except the psychophysical aptitude test.
As always, you can still drive in Spain with your original UK licence for the first six months you are here while waiting for the exchange to be processed.
It is important to keep in mind however, that your driving license is not exchangeable if you obtained it in your country of origin while you were already a legal resident in Spain.
Which steps do I have to follow and what do I need?
The applicant must obtain a series of documentation listed below, schedule an appointment at the DGT traffic office and pay the 28,87€ fee.
Psychophysical aptitude report from an authorized Driver Recognition Center
Complete and sign the official form
Proof of your identity
Proof of your legal residence in Spain
Your unique driver’s licence code
A recent passport size photo (32 x 26 mm) in color with a white background
Once the procedure is complete, your original license will be cancelled and a provisional permit will be issued to you. Within about a month and a half or so, you will receive your definitive licence, which will be sent by mail to your address.
