What is the EU blue card?

The EU blue card is a special work permit for professionals who are interested in working within the European Union.

On May 17, 2021, a new directive was approved which makes the card even more flexible, to attract and promote international talents who wish to work and reside in Europe.

What advantages does it offer?

In addition to granting the interested person the right to work and live in Spain, their families (spouses and children) can also go with them. Both the profesional and their family then have the ability to move within 25 of the 27 EU countries freely.

Who can apply?

All professionals who are considered “specially qualified”. This definition includes those who have completed an educational degree of at least a three years or professionals who have at least five years experience in the same field of the employment they will be carrying out in Spain.

Which other requirements need to be met?

In order to qualify to apply for the EU blue card, it is necessary to present the following documents:

- A valid contract or signed offer from the employer for a minimum of 6 months which includes a salary 1,5 times the average net anual salary in the EU country where you will work.

- Accredited documents which show superior studies / qualification, the most common is a university degree.

- Necessary travel documents.

- Proof of medical insurance, both for the professional and for all of their family members who wish to relocate to the European Union.

How long is the card valid?

In Spain, the EU blue card is valid for one year, but can be renewed annually.
